WACO, Texas – After putting a handful of entrants into the Round of 16 after the first day at the women’s NJCAA Tennis Championships, Barton was not able to advance anyone to the quarterfinals.
Barton’s Neus Torregrosa lost a battle at No. 1 singles, as did Sarah Hammer at No. 2 in the Round of 16. Jenna Groene did likewise at No. 5 singles as did the No. 2 and 3 doubles teams.
As a team, the 21st ranked Cougars are currently sitting in 18th place.
Barton does have a trio of entrants alive in the consolation bracket.
Torregrosa, the 9th ranked player in the NJCAA, matched up with the fourth seed in the No. 1 draw in Valentina Gonzalez of Seminole State. Torregrosa battled Gonzalez tough, but lost in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4 to end her singles draw.
Hammer had a difficult Round of 16 battle, taking on the top seed in the No. 2 draw. Maria Genovese of Tyler rolled by Hammer, 6-0, 6-0. Groene took on the No. 5 seed, losing to Priscilla Morales of Laredo in straight sets at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-1.
Also ending their tournament was the No. 2 doubles team of Groene and Hammer as they fell 6-0, 6-1 to the third seed in the draw from Abraham Baldwin, Agustina Diaz and Vasavi Shanthis, 6-0, 6-1.
The No. 3 doubles team of Thamires Lima and Ksenija Dmitrovic lost their Round of 16 match against the top seed in the draw, Oceane Garibal and Afordite Tzanopoulous of Tyler, 6-0, 6-1. But since Lima and Dmitrovic received a first round bye, they now move into the consolation bracket.
Already in the consolation bracket after first round losses, Barton had two singles and one doubles team stay alive.
The No. 1 doubles team of Torregrosa and Shai Cartmill moved along in the back draw by defeating Gabby Mireles and Syvoney Ybarra of Jacksonville, 8-2. That moved the duo into the consolation quarterfinals.
On the singles sides, Dmitrovic rode a pair of byes into the quarterfinals of the consolation draw at No. 3 and Cartmill picked up a win over Rosario Bove, 8-1, to advance to the quarterfinals at No. 4 singles.
Lima wasn’t as fortunate at No. 6 singles, losing her consolation match to Jillian Cran of Jones County, 8-3, to end her draw.
