For the second straight tournament Zach Vesta found himself in the semifinals of the championship bracket at a tournament. His run ended in the semifinals again at the Jet Invitational hosted by Newman University in Wichita.
Vesta came back through for a third place finish to lead all Barton wrestlers in the final event of the fall semester. Several Cougars grapplers reached the consolation third round with a pair making it to the consolation semis.
Vesta opened with a bye then defeated Newman’s Forlanda Parker by fall in at 2:34 in the quarterfinals at 149 pounds. He lost a close 5-4 decision to Travon Smith of Oklahoma City in the semifinals then defeated Trent Robb of Bethany College by fall in the consolation semis. Vesta also recorded a pin in the third place match as he matched up with Parker again.
Caysen Smith made it to the consolation semis at 133 by defeating Jake Gentzler of Newman 8-6 in the third round. He lost to Blake Daupin of Central Oklahoma in the consolation semis to end his day.
Also making it to the consolation semifinals was Jonathan Bowen at 197. Bowen lost to Micquille Robinson of Fort Hays by a 5-4 decision one round short of a third place match.
Kade Sander (157), Sean Taborsky (165), Devon Baker (174), and Tim Johnson (184) all advanced to the third round of the consolation bracket.
Barton will resume the season on Jan. 2 when the Cougars travel to Fremont, Neb. for the Midland Open.
