Cardinals' Nicholson finishes 36th

The Hoisington Cardinals place runner-up at Smoky Hill Country Club in Hays to qualify for the 3A state golf tournament at Hesston. Team members are Drew Nicholson, Noah Dolezal, Nolan Wilborn, Ayden Davis, Sam Baldyga and Jared Batchman.

HESSTON — Hoisington's Drew Nicholson finished 36th at 170 (84-90) in Tuesday's 3A state golf championship at Hesston Golf Course. 

On Monday, Nicholson (40-44) birdied No. 1. The Cardinals (380) missed the 18-hole team cutline. The Cardinals also counted scores by Noah Dolezal, 90 (46-46); Nolan Wilborn, 101 (46-55); and Ayden Davis, 105 (46-54). Sam Baldyga, 106 (53-53) and Adam Baldyga, 122 (61-61) also competed.

Larned's Easton Fitzpatrick (89) missed the 18-hole cut by one stroke. Fitzpatrick birdied No. 12, but carded a trio of triple bogeys.

Carbondale-Santa Fe Trail shot 639 (331-308) to rally past runner-up Cheney at 653 (329-324) for the 3A team championship. Wichita Trinity's Lucas Scheufler captured the 3A state championship (137) and birdied four holes Tuesday for a 2-under-par 69. He birdied four holes and shot 3-under-par 68 Monday. Marysville's Jackson Rader shot 142 (72-70) to finish runner-up.
