Fourth ranked Cougar women dominate at Sterling Fall Invite
barton community college golf

HUTCHINSON – It wasn’t so much about winning the Sterling Fall Halloween Shoot Out this past week at Carey Park in Hutchinson for the Barton women’s golf team.

No, it was going out and shooting the best score they could.

The competition wasn’t going to be there. Just one other school fielded a full team besides the two from Barton.

So while winning by 98 strokes is nice, it was about getting some golf in on the course where the Region VI Championship will be played next spring.

Barton hot a 638 to win the meet over York College, which shot a 736. The Barton B team shot a 777 as the only other team score.

“We thought Sterling might have a full team as well, but it didn’t work out that way,” Coach Doug Kaiser said.

“But it was good for our girls to play where we will have the Region VI Championship. A few of our girls have played there, but not all of them. This give them good experience.”

Perhaps the biggest news of the week for the Barton women was the rankings that came out. Barton was ranked No. 4 in the nation in the initial poll put out by Golf Stat.

It is the first time in school history the Cougars were ranked in the top five.

The top two golfers for Barton had been to Carey Park before. They cruised around the course. Mutita Booranakunamanee won her second straight meet with a 75-73 for a 2-day total of 4-over par 148.

Vilma Efraimsson was on her heels with a 77-73 for a 150. Those two were 16 strokes better than the rest of the 16-player field.

Barton also had two more in the top five. Gestemani Lopez shot an 81-88 to finish fourth at 169 while Ady Crough finished fifth with a 171. It was the first meet for both at Carey Park.

Madison Peters rounded out the Cougars team with a 183.

Barton fielded a full second team, led by Ana Hislop with a 184 and Jacqueline Strunk with a 188. Elle McDaniel finished with a 195 while Dawn Ledebeon shot a 211 and Sydney Schneiden shot a 220.

The event closed out the fall portion of the Barton schedule.
