HAYS — Hoisington's No 3 ranked Haylee Holinde (22-3, 235) upset Onaga's No. 1 ranked Emma Fordham 9-1 to capture Saturday's 3-1A girls state wrestling championship.

The Hoisington crowd roared for the first Cardinals' girls state wrestling champion.

"It was a cool experience for my teammates to see me accomplish one of my biggest dreams," Holinde said. "She goes for under-hooks and bear-hugs to get takedowns. I watched videos and prepared myself to be mentally ready. I kept my distance and circled around to tried to stay away from stalling cautions."

After leading 2-1 in the final 30 seconds, Holinde fought off a headlock and turned Fordham for a 7-point combination and a 9-1 lead.

"Those last 30 seconds was crazy. She tried a headlock, and I defend that really well," Holinde said. "I reached across her and took her down. It was so fun to hear everyone cheering for me. My adrenaline was going and I was shaking when I saw time going down."

Holinde defeated Douglass' Braylie Knisley 5-0 in the semifinals. Holinde lost to 5A runner-up Gianna Redcorn of Kapaun-Mt. Carmel, Nickerson's third-place 3A medalist Elizabeth Dick and Holcomb's Abi Redden.

Hoisington wrestling coach Kody Cook was proud of Holinde's achievement.

"That's our first girls state championship. Haylee did a great job slowing her down," Cook said. "It was a good match that Haylee controlled. That last few seconds was a flurry. Our crowd erupted. Haylee didn't anything to worry about."

Hoisington's No. 2 Nevaeh Graves (30-4, 170) finished at state runner-up with a loss (4:19) to Oakley's No. 1 ranked Atavia Cain (42-1) Graves beat Council Grove's No. 4 Benah Cannon (0:59) to make the championship match.

"Cain ran her stuff and Neveah got down early," Cook said.

Hoisington's girls (96) placed fifth in 3-1A and Ellinwood (48) finished 10th. Norton (151.5) won the girls team title.

Ellinwood's Emma Hahn (25-8, 235) placed third with a 6-2 victory over Douglass' Kinsley. Hahn lost to Onaga's Fordham in the semifinals (3:18).
