Great Bend High School's first game into the Class 5A District 6 schedule couldn't have gone much better than it did.
The Panthers got off to a slow start, but picked up steam as it went on to get a 27-0 victory over Newton at home on Friday night.
The win puts Great Bend at the top of the district standings.
Great Bend is one of two teams with a 1-0 record in the district with Salina South defeating Salina Central 14-7.
Then you take things to the points system.
Each team has a chance to gain or lose up to 21 points per game. A team's points are determined by a game's points differential.
Great Bend beat Newton by 27 points, so they earn the maximum 21 points toward the system.
Newton drops into the red with minus-21 points.
South defeated Central by seven points, therefore South has seven points in the system and Central is at minus-seven.
Great Bend has a chance to guarantee a trip to the playoffs on the road against Salina Central on Friday, Oct. 24.
