Garden City High School golfer Abbey Campbell edged teammate and Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year Abby Shaddix by a stroke, carding a 37 on Tuesday at The Club at StoneRidge for first place in the 2012 Lady Panther Invite.
Shaddix finished second at 38, followed by Liberal’s Evan Summer in third place at 45.
Garden City won the tournament, tabulating a team score of 172 to distance itself from second-place Hays (214).
Great Bend finished third at 219. The Lady Panthers had a trio of golfers finish in the top 10, as Taylor Mohr finished seventh, Maddie Werth placed ninth and McKenna Mauler took home 10th. All three shot 53s, with Mohr emerging on a scorecard tiebreaker.
“I think going into it, the girls probably thought that their scores would be a little bit better, but I think that put a little pressure on them, just a little extra pressure,” said Great Bend head coach Troy Stein of his team playing on their home course.
“But at the same time, none of the scores were that great, so we ended up placing where we thought we would. We were actually only five strokes out of second place, which is probably the best we have finished all year. Having three individuals finishing in the top 10, that’s the first time that’s happened this season.”
Stein said it was a pleasant surprise to have Mohr move up the leaderboard.
“That was great to see,” Stein said. “She probably took five strokes off anything that she’s shot all year and she had a good day. Maddie and McKenna probably expected to be in the 40s, so they’re probably a little disappointed with their performances, even though they still finished in the top 10.
“I just think there were a lot of players that probably thought they would shoot better today than they did. I guess it was just one of those days.”
As far as All-WAC honors are concerned, Campbell finished behind Shaddix with the second-lowest score from an accumulation of season results, followed by Garden City’s Lindsay Bradstreet, Hays’ Courtney Hess and Mauler rounding out the first-team all-conference group.
Mauler will be bidding for a second straight trip to the Class 5A state tournament next Monday, when GBHS takes part in a regional at Salina Municipal Golf Course.
Werth, a senior, in quest of a third straight state appearance, was an honorable mention all-conference performer.
