GIRLS
HAYS – The Great Bend girls built double digit leads before holding off the Colby Eagles 52-47 Thursday at the Gerald Mitchell Hays Shoot-Out.
Great Bend (1-0) plays in Friday’s semifinals at Hays High.
The Panthers led 27-16 at halftime and held a double digit lead most of the second half. But Colby used a 10-0 run in the third quarter and a 13-3 spurt in the fourth period to slice the lead to 52-47 with just over a minute left in regulation.
The Panthers left an opening with three consecutive turnovers, but Colby was unable to take advantage with two turnovers and a missed shot.
Carly Dreiling and Carly Boyd each made a free throw for the final seven-point margin. Lauren Welsch led the Panthers with 10 points. Boyd and Regan Unruh each added eight points.
The Panthers converted 17 of 58 field goals and 17 of 33 free throws. Colby made 14 of 54 field goals and 13 of 21 free throws. Colby committed 25 turnovers and the Panthers had 19 turnovers.

BOYS
HAYS — The Great Bend Panther boys basketball team jumped out to a 15-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back as they trounced the Colby Eagles 67-41 in their opening game of the Hays City Shootout on Thursday.
The Panthers got hot from the three-point line, nailing eight treys in the first half. The hot start allowed them to grab a 44-19 lead at the break.
Kody Crosby led the Panthers with 21 points. Trey Ibarra scored 11 points and Shade Wondra added 10.
Chandler Comfort led all scorers for Colby with 13 points. Ashton Russ added 9.
Great Bend is set to face Hays tonight at 8:15 in the tournament’s semifinal matchup. Hays beat DeSoto 65-53 in the first round.
In the other semifinal game slated for today, Garden City plays Olathe North after the Buffaloes beat TMP 57-46. Olathe North beat Newton 46-34.
Depending on today’s results, Great Bend will either play in the championship game at 5 p.m. or the third-place game at noon on Saturday.
