Thanks to two goals from Enrique Guyton and another from Joaquin Garcia, the Great Bend High School boys’ soccer team captured its second Western Athletic Conference win of the season on Tuesday evening.
The Panthers beat Hays 3-0 at Cavanaugh Field to advance to 5-1-1 overall, 2-1 in WAC play.
The Panthers fell 3-1 at Hays on Sept. 10, their only loss this season.
“That weekend before (the first game against Hays), we played Northwest Wichita, one of the best teams in the state,” GBHS head coach Gus Prieto said. “We went into double overtime. We were tired, but we were also too confident. We made a couple mistakes.
“I’m glad that happened early in the season. We were ready for this today.”
Guyton punched his first goal through in the first half on an assist from senior Alex Urias.
Guyton made it 2-0 in the second half, getting the ball when a Hays defender missed a header in the box. Rafael Urias got the assist.
Garcia drilled a shot into the top of the net to make it 3-0 in the final minutes of the game.
“They are forwards,” Prieto said. “Enrique started the game. He started the last game, too. He scored once against Junction, and twice today. They are forwards. They are always ready to score. They are right there. They have the speed. They have the skill, so you never know what’s going to happen.”
The Panthers had 25 shots, while limiting Hays to only seven.
Great Bend hosts Dodge City for another WAC game on Thursday afternoon. The junior varsity starts at 4 p.m. with the varsity game following it.
