GLAMIS, Calif. – A 69-year-old Great Bend man died last Tuesday morning in an all-terrain vehicle crash at the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area near Glamis, Calif., the California Highway Patrol reported. The Imperial County. Calif., Coroner’s Office confirmed the name of the victim as Lance Walters.

According to the CHP, at about 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, the victim was driving a 2019 Polaris in a southerly direction and “failed to observe the change in terrain and elevation ahead of his location.” Subsequently, the driver traveled off and down a razor back dune.

He sustained fatal blunt-force trauma injuries as a result of the crash. Impairment was not a factor in the incident.

The collision remains under investigation, the CHP noted.

Authorities indicated that ATV accidents are common in this area. The dunes see a lot of traffic over the holidays.

Walters was the owner of McDonald Tank and Equipment Company Inc. of Great Bend.
