LARNED – Memorial Day carries a special significance for Pawnee County native Brandon Enabnit.
The holiday represents a solemn opportunity to honor the sacrifices made by the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. For Enabnit, it is honoring his grandfather, Archie Douglas, a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force who was a non-combat casualty of the Korean War.
Although Enabnit never had the opportunity to meet his grandfather, he noted that his grandfather’s service and sacrifice have remained a lasting source of inspiration throughout his life.
Enabnit joined the Kansas Army National Guard in 2023, with a commitment to serving both his nation and his local community. After completing basic combat training at Fort Moore and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Gregg-Adams, he continued his military service while pursuing additional roles dedicated to public safety and community protection.
He currently serves in the Kansas Army National Guard; as a K-9 handler for the Pawnee County Sheriff’s Office with his four-legged teammate Ozzy, and as a firefighter with the Rozel Fire Department.
He views Memorial Day not only as a national day of remembrance, but also as a personal time to reflect on the dedication, courage, and selflessness demonstrated by those who answered the call to serve.
“Memorial Day is a time to remember those who wore the uniform and the sacrifices they made for our country,” Enabnit said. “It is especially meaningful for me because it allows me to honor my grandfather’s memory and recognize the legacy of service he left behind.”
Enabnit believes that military service, law enforcement, and emergency response all share a common purpose rooted in duty, sacrifice, and commitment to others. Through his continued service in uniform and within his community, he strives to uphold the values exemplified by the generations of Americans who served before him.
As communities across the nation observe Memorial Day, Enabnit encourages others to take time to remember the service members and families whose sacrifices have helped preserve the freedoms enjoyed today.
