There are several new books at the Ellinwood District Library. They include:

"Lost Discoveries" by Dick Teresi. This innovative narrative demonstrates that the roots of modern science were established centuries, and in some cases millennia, before such famous scientists as Galileo and Newton were even born. In this enlightening and entertaining book, the author describes many discoveries from all over the non-Western world.

"Mister Pip" by Lloyd Jones. On a tropical island shattered by war, where the teachers have fled with almost everyone else, only one chooses to stay behind. It was the eccentric Mr. Watts, who sweeps out the ruined schoolhouse and begins to read to the children each day from the classic Great Expectations. Soon the devastated children of the island are riveted by the adventure of a young orphan named Pip, even as bombs and artillery echo in the background.

"American Shaolin" by Matthew Polly. This is the raucously funny story of one young American’s quest to become the toughest dude on the planet, and possibly find inner peace along the way. Matthew Polly grew up in the schoolyards of Kansas, decided to pursue this dream by studying with the legendary sect of monks who invented Zen Buddhism and kungfu. Eventually Polly was initiated into the Shaolin Temple, making him the first American to be accepted as a Shaolin disciple.

"Family Ties" by Danielle Steel. Annie Ferguson was a bright young Manhattan architect. But then she receives a phone call that changes everything. Overnight, she became the mother to her sister’s three orphaned children, keeping a promise she never regretted making, even if it meant putting her own life on hold. But unexpected events take lives into uncharted waters, a chance encounter changes Annie’s life yet again.

"Zero History" by William Gibson. Hollis Henry finds herself once again working for the global marketing magnate, Hubertus Bigend. Bigend used whatever power, money, and influence to convince to join his team. Now she is discovering what his team is really up to when she joins two other new "acquisitions" to Bigend’s fold. It’s a seriously dangerous world and eerie circumstances may set them all adrift.

"The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration" by Isabel Wilkerson. The author chronicles one of the great untold stories of American history: the decades-long migration of black citizens who fled the South for northern and western cities in search of a better life.
