Explore Great Bend opens with mimosas

The City of Great Bend’s annual Explore Great Bend campaign opens Saturday with the Mingling and Mimosas Day, Community Coordinator Christina Hayes said.

The goal of today is to get out and explore Great Bend, mingle and sip mimosas (some with alcohol and some without). Around participating stores, organizers will be rewarding those out enjoying the events.

“This is our annual retail event,” she said, she said of Explore Great Bend. “The stores in November are trying to encourage people to shop local before going out of town.”

The upcoming Explore Great Bend weekends include:

• Saturday, Nov. 12 – Business Open House Day. Take this opportunity to see what features and products stores have this holiday season for gift-giving needs.

• Saturday, Nov. 19 – Find the Hidden Turkey Day. Find the hidden turkeys in participating businesses get a special or discount. This is a great activity for the whole family.

• Friday, Nov. 25 – Black Friday. Door-buster deals, specials, bargains.

• Saturday, Nov. 26 – Small Business Saturday. Cookie contest and Home for the Holidays Parade. The $1,000 giveaway will be after the parade that starts at 5:30 p.m. downtown. There will also be a $750 second-place prize, a $500 third-place prize and a $250 fourth-place prize.

Christmas and the City of Great Bend’s annual Home for the Holidays Festival and Parade are fast approaching, and plans are already underway, Great Bend Community Coordinator Christina Hayes said.

“It’s right upon us,” she said, noting plans are already well in place.

The festival, the city’s holiday kickoff event, is set for 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, in downtown Great Bend. The theme pays homage to the city’s 150th anniversary this year – “150 Years of Celebration” with former City Attorney Bob Suelter serving as grand marshal.

“It’s Great Bend’s way of inviting Santa to town and kicking off our Christmas season.” Hayes said.

However, this is by no means the first Yuletide celebration of the year, she said. Activities actually start this Saturday with first of the four Explore Great Bend themed Saturdays – Mingling and Mimosas.

Below is a brief rundown of the festivities provided by the city.
