TOPEKA — Hoisington’s eighth-place Addison Smith (101, 51-50) led a trio of top 10 medalists as the runner-up Cardinals (414) earned a trip to the 3-1A state golf tournament at Cheney’s Cherry Oaks Golf Course next week. Smith will make her third consecutive state appearance.

The Cardinals also counted scores by ninth-place Ava Henry (102, 51-51), 10th-place Addison Guthrie (104, 51-53) and 12th-place two-time qualifier Chandra Ehler (107, 52-55). Fifteenth-place two-time qualifier Heavin Hipp (110, 57-53) rounded out the Cardinals’ lineup at Topeka's Lake Shawnee Golf Course. Cardinal golfer Chloe Schneweis missed the regional in a team playoff when the KSHSAA elected to compete with five players.

Hoisington’s perfect day was highlighted by birdies by Henry at the par 4, third hole and Smith at the par 4, seventh hole.

Course conditions and wind conditions were ideal on the hilly Lake Shawnee layout.

"The hardest part was getting familiar with the course in one day because none of our girls had played there," said Hoisington coach Bruce Cooper. "It's a hilly course with greens hard to read because of the changes in elevation. The girls converted a lot of short putts. It was tough playing conditions because the course is hilly."

The Cardinals returned its lineup from a team that missed the state tournament last year.

"I could tell they were motivated to qualify for state because they all were back from last year," Cooper said. "We were under the score we expected, which was gratifying. I asked the girls to play the best they could and keep playing especially after a poor hole. They did an exceptional job."

Silver Lake (397) captured the regional title with Carbondale-Santa Fe Trail (427) and Council Grove (444) also qualifying for state.

Sante Fe Trail’s Braegen Buessing (91) captured medalist honors by one stroke over Osage City’s Laci Davenport.

The Cardinals captured girls state golf titles in 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1985.

Larned misses regional tourney

COLBY — A banner season ended early when a quarantine kept the Larned Indian girls from competing at the 3-1A golf regional at Colby. The Indians were unable to compete at last week's Central Kansas League golf tournament.
