LARNED FOOTBALL

LARNED — A talented freshman class will boost the depth of Larned's football team after a 2-7 record and a 76-12 playoff loss to 2A state champion Southeast of Saline.

Larned football coach Brady Keith will rely on an 11-player senior class that will be boosted by the finest freshman class in recent memory following an impressive junior-high football season

“We’ve had great senior leadership," Keith said. "We're excited about this team. We may be inexperienced in a number of spots. But our guys hold each other accountable. We have a dedicated senior class who have done a great job of leadership."

Larned features its top rusher, leading receiver and second-leading quarterback who passed, rushed and caught passes.

The Indians returning offensive starters are QB Mason Miller (380 passing, 2 TDs, 173 rushing, 108 receiving), FB David Colglazier (492 rushing, 3 TDs), 6-foot-6 offensive lineman Kylier Greene and wide receiver Tristan Regan (527 receiving, 3 TDs).

Six returners on a projected 3-5 defense are safety Miller (48 tackles), LB Colglazier (33 tackles), DE Greene (22 tackles), LB Kooper Rasmussen (25 tackles), DE Mikal Wilder and LB Regan (23 tackles).

Larned projects to operate an I-option offense with Miller being a viable passing threat.

The development of the offensive line will be a key to the Indian’s success as they want to establish the running game with returning starters in the backfield.

Perennial 2A playoff qualifier Hoisington (6-5) headlines a typically challenging District with Lakin (6-3), Cimarron (2-7), and Southwestern Heights (2-7).

Keith is assisted by Cory Johnson, Antwome Topps, Keenan Rasmussen, Kirby Westerman and Tyson Nicholson.

LARNED — Slowly, but surely Larned's volleyball team has made progress. Last year's 8-24 record followed records of 4-29, 2-26 and 3-32 the previous three seasons.

Jadyn Crosby (216 serves, 90 winners, 68 digs, 33 serves received, 22 blocks, 21 assists) and versatile all-around player Brooke Simmons (296 serves received, 200 digs, 184 serves, 174 assists, 77 winners, 10 blocks) provide a solid one/two offensive and defensive spark.

Larned volleyball coach Amy Simmons expects Crosby and Simmons to lead the way for an indian team with zero seniors.

Simmons is counting on Crosby and Simmons for strong offensive performances. Simmons said Emma Creamer will play as a defensive specialist and expects her to bring energy and grit.

The 14-player roster features three juniors, five sophomores and six freshmen.

Simmons said the 14-player roster will gain plenty of experience filling a varsity and junior varsity schedule. She expects every player will see a lot of court time.

The Central Kansas League features 3A state champion Halstead (43-2, 8-1 CKL) and 3A third-place finisher Hoisington (41-5, 6-2 CKL).

Lauren Sleder leads Larned tennis

LARNED — No. 1 singles Lauren Sleder (25-10) achieved school history as Larned's first freshman in 50 years to qualify for the state tennis tournament.

Sleder lost 6-2, 6-0 to Marysvlle's Ava Spicer and 8-5 to Topeka's Cair Paravel Madeline Poole. Third-place regional qualifier Sleder and Buhler’s Sofia Spies were the lone freshmen to qualify for state. Central Kansas League champion Sleder won four tournaments while splitting the No. 1 spot with Cassie Manry (24-4, 21-10).

Larned head coach Mark Lessard starts his 20th year with assistant coach Matt Sleder.

"It should be a solid year with 10 of our 12 players returning," Lessard said.

Freshman Olivia Holt, younger sister of two-time state medalist Abby Holt, will play a pivotal role.

Other varsity starters will be Keirstin Pinkston, Maggie Haas, Leah Pinkston and freshman Olivia Holt. Emma McNett, Jozlyn Mead, and Faith Kelty will push for varsity playing time.
