Great Bend opens WAC league play against Garden City tonight

Great Bend will kick off the Western Athletic Conference on the road Friday at Garden City. The first WAC game was originally scheduled at Great Bend, but was switched to Garden City.
Great Bend’s girls are 3-2 after qualifying for the Class 5A state tournament last year. Great Bend’s boys are 1-4. Both Garden City teams are 4-4.
Dodge City beat the Lady Buffaloes 40-29 Tuesday. Dodge City scored 22 points off 22 Garden City 22 turnovers. Jessica Carrillo led Garden City with 14 points and nine rebounds.  Carrillo (12 ppg) and Abbie Dart (9 ppg) lead the Buffaloes.
Garden City’s boys stopped a three-game losing streak with a 50-45 victory over Dodge City.  The Buffaloes outscored Dodge City 19-7 to rally from a 15-point deficit. Caleb Tramp scored 20 points and Jared Koster added 13 points.
Friday’s other games match Macksville at Central Plains; Ness City at St. John; Larned at Hillsboro; Little River at Ellinwood; Norwich at Stafford; Otis-Bison at Victoria; Ashland at Pawnee Heights; and Haven at Hoisington.

• CENTRAL PLAINS
The Central Plains girls are unbeaten (6-0) and ranked No. 1 in Class 2A after beating Smith Center 58-33. Taylor Rolfs scored 23 points and Regan Phelan added 16 points.
The Central Plains boys (5-1) are ranked second in Class 2A. Michel Ryan led four players in double figures with 15 points in a 61-37 victory over Smith Center.

• ST. JOHN
Two-time defending state champion St. John (7-0) is unbeaten after a 79-27 victory over Kinsley. Dean Wade scored 27 points. The St. John girls (6-2) have lost to unbeaten Ellinwood and unbeaten Central Plains.
• LARNED
Larned’s boys (6-1, 1-0) cruised past Smoky Valley and travels to Hillsboro (5-1, 1-0) Friday. The Larned girls (1-6, 0-1) face high-scoring Alex Ratzlaff of Hillsboro (1-5).

• ELLINWOOD
Ellinwood’s girls are unbeaten (6-0) and ranked third in Class 2A. Fort Hays State signee Rachel Doll is averaging 21 points per game. Delaney Beckwith is averaging 14 points and Allison Panning 10 rebounds per game. The Ellinwood boys (3-3) have split their first six games behind Marc Waite (13 ppg) and Tyson Martinez (9 ppg).

• OTIS-BISON
Otis-Bison’s boys (6-0) survived a 45-43 victory over Stafford. Kyle Patrick and veteran Hayden Maier. The Otis-Bison girls (3-3) beat Stafford 54-19 as Taylor Reagabn scored 28 points.

• HOISINGTON
The Hoisington boys (2-4, 0-1) entertain a high-scoring Haven team coming off a 68-65 loss to Sterling. The Cardinals lost 66-34 to Pratt. Haven’s girls lost 48-40 to Haven, but has a talented team. The Hoisington girls (2-4, 0-1) lost 34-23 to Pratt  Rylie Koester is averaging 15 ppg.

• MACKSVILLE
Macksville’s boys (3-3) have swept three straight games after an 0-3 start. Cunningham beat the Macksville girls 38-19.
