DENVER, Colo. – Tribune Broadcasting, a division of Tribune Media (NYSE: TRCO), announced the appointment of Joan Barrett as vice president/GM of KDVR and KWGN in Denver. Barrett will oversee all aspects of the station, including strategic planning and day-to-day operations. Barrett is expected to join the company later this month.
Originally from Great Bend, Barrett graduated from Kansas State University and is working on an MBA from Friends University.
She comes to KDVR/KWGN from Sunflower Broadcasting Inc., owned by Schurz Communications Inc., where she was president/general manager, overseeing a group of six television stations in Kansas, including KWCH, KSCW, KBSL, KBSH, KBSD, KDCU (JSA/SSA) and two digital channels. Barrett was also instrumental in the launch of the successful high school sports website, CatchitKansas.com, and its associated magazine.
Barrett has been an active leader in the Wichita community and the media industry. She most recently served on the Board of Directors for the Wichita Metro Chamber of Commerce, Goodwill Industries of Kansas, and the Kansas Food Bank. She was a member of the President’s Council at Wichita State University and Wichita Downtown Rotary. She is a past chairman of the Kansas Association of Broadcasters and she is a founder, current board member and trainer for The Carole Kneeland Project for Responsible Journalism. The SBI news team received three National Edward R. Murrow awards during her tenure.
