Smith captured four gold medals and led Pawnee Heights to the 2002 Class 1A track championship. Smith ranks third all-time in the 800 meters (1:48.18) and fifth all-time in the mile (4:02.58) among Kansas natives. Smith won the mens mile at the 2006 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. He was a 1,500m All-American in 2006, a four-time indoor All-American, collegiate record holder in the indoor 1,000 meters. He holds the indoor 1,000m school record and the outdoor 800-meter and 1,500m school records. Smith qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the 800 meters by diving to finish in third place at the 2008 Eugene Olympic Trials, edging out Khadevis Robinson.
