Great Bend Fire/EMS
Firefighters made three ambulance runs on Tuesday. There was one fire call.
At 3:10 a.m. the Great Bend Fire Department received a call of a possible structure fire at the Baltzell Motel located at 705 10th.
Upon arrival first units found heavy fire and smoke coming from the southeast part of the structure.
Firefighters attacked the fire and found it had extended into the attic area.
The residents were evacuated from the two wings of the motel while firefighters continued to fight the fire.
Units were on scene for three hours extinguishing the fire and checking for hot spots in the attic. All the utilities were shut off.
The west wing of the motel was not affected; as a result the utilities were turned back on for that portion after a licensed electrician inspected the electrical system.
The GBFD was assisted by the Police Department and the local utility companies.
The State Fire Marshall will be in this morning to assist with the investigation.
Fire damage was extensive in the southeast portion of the structure along with heavy smoke damage in several rooms of the motel.
