Barton's tandem sparks 69-49 victory

INDEPENDENCE – Barton Community College's Nigerian twin towers dominated the paint as 6-2 Vivian Onugha contributed 29 points and 14 rebounds and 6-4 Vera Ojenwa delivered career highs of 23 points and 18 rebounds to spark a 69-48 Jayhawk Conference basketball victory over Independence.

Barton dominated the rebounding 50-27. Onugha earned her seventh double/double. Ojenuwa posted her ninth double/double of the season.

Region leading distributors Quezia Bertoni and Grace John dished out nine and five assists respectively while adding 14 combined points.

The Cougars shot 43% on the evening but sank a season low 2-of-18 (11.1%) beyond the arc with Tatum Boettjer and John draining the lone makes from long distance.

Independence's Jasirae Vick scored 22 points and Merveille Nkoyock added 12 points. They combined for 6-of-15 shots from long range.

The Cougars (14-5, 9-4) cruised to a 44-21 halftime lead after a pair of 8-0 stretches. Independence slips to 5-8 in league and 11-8 on the season.

Indy sliced a 25-point deficit to 11 with 3:53 to play before the Cougars put it in cruise control scoring 11 of the final 14 points including the final nine in securing a 20-point victory to complete the season sweep over the Pirates and winning their fifth straight in the series including the last two trips to the ICC Field House.

Next up is Hall of Fame Saturday as Barton takes the floor for a 5:30 p.m. tip hosting Pratt Community College. Pratt shocked the No. 25 ranked Cougars by 10 points back November 21.
