HUTCHINSON – Great Bend’s defending state champion Kaylin Wahlmeier (656 (161-248-247) earned 5-1A regional medalist honors. She’ll join her teammates at the 5-1A state tournament at Wichita with a runner-up (3,084) finish behind regional champion Salina South (3,105).
Wahlmeier used the first game to find her sweet spot, and she rolled 248 and 247 games. The Panthers averaged 178 for 711 in four Baker games, highlighted by a 214 game.
"I'm happy because regionals is the tough part. Today is the step-ladder to state," Wahlmeier said. "I had a good line from the beginning. Once you qualify for state, it's smooth sailing. Hopefully, we can pull it out next Thursday."
Panther Zoey Mayberry (575, 226-189-160) earned seventh place. Paige Heine contributed a season best 226 and Emilee Nelson scored a 222 game. Aliyah Fryberger shot a 202 game. Sahara Rhiza fired a high game of 170. Fryberger placed 11th (546); Sahara Rhiza, 16th (496); Emilee Nelson, 17th (494); and Paige Heine, 22nd (460).
"The girls bowled great," said Great Bend coach David Feldbauer. "We got lined up the second game and almost shot 900. Kaylin was strong all day. The other girls were bowling good. Baker games, we shot a 214 and had two solid games after that. Monday, we showed up and shot a school record score."
The Panther girls finished third (3,143) at the state tournament last year.
Great Bend's Caleb McNett, 621 (200-223-198); earned an individual state berth with an 11th-place finish.
